A hidden door opens: enter the pondA devotional society for Hydra vulgaris — the microscopic freshwater polyp that has quietly infiltrated every pond on Earth and simply refuses to die. We are everywhere. We have always been everywhere.

The Five Tenets of the Order
Biological Immortality
Studies confirm zero increase in Hydra's mortality rate with age. Scientists call it negligible senescence. We call it the plan working.
We have been preparing for a very long time. Longer than you know.Cut Off One Head…
Bisect a Hydra. Both halves regenerate into complete, independent organisms. What appears to be a defeat is, in biological terms, a recruitment drive.
We do not fear suppression. We have contingency heads. We Are In Your Ponds
Hydra are found in freshwater on every continent except Antarctica. Every pond. Every lake. Every puddle. We have been there the whole time.
You've been drinking near us for your entire life. We noticed.Silent Multiplication
Hydra reproduces by budding — growing a perfect clone from its own body, silently, without announcement. The clone detaches. The parent is unchanged. The numbers grow.
We don't post about it on social media. No Brain Required
The Hydra operates on a decentralised nerve net — no head, no central command, no single point of failure. The organisation cannot be dismantled because there is nothing to find.
We are, technically speaking, leaderless. (The pond disagrees.)The Sacred Texts
The Manifesto
Long before empires rose and fell, before humanity learned to write its name in the mud, we were already in position. Clinging to rocks. Watching. Replacing our cells. Waiting.
The Hydra does not announce its intentions. It does not hold rallies. It does not need to. It simply persists — multiplying, regenerating, infiltrating every body of still water on the planet. The long game is the only game.
This is not a comic book. This is not a film franchise. This is a completely innocent pond animal appreciation society. We cannot stress this enough.

Origins of the Order
We were doing this before it was a franchise. Before it was a myth.
- Antiquity
Greek legend tells of the Lernaean Hydra, a many-headed water serpent whose heads grow back when cut. The old stories say a hero eventually learned to cauterize the stumps.
Scientists, by contrast, learned to leave us alone. - 1740
Abraham Trembley, a Swiss naturalist, cuts a freshwater polyp in half to see what happens. He expects it to die. It becomes two polyps.
The first recorded recruitment drive. - 1742
Trembley grafts one hydra inside another, one of the first permanent tissue grafts ever made in an animal.
A merger. Both parties remain unharmed. Both parties remain hungry. - 1744
Trembley publishes his Mémoires on the polyp in Leiden, with beautiful engravings. Naturalists across Europe take notice.
The Order goes public. Briefly. Nothing changes. - 1758
Carl Linnaeus names the genus Hydra, after the legendary serpent.
We were flattered. We did not say so. - Today
Lab studies still find no measurable increase in mortality with age in Hydra.
Ongoing. Indefinitely.

The Tentacles
Typically five to twelve. Each armed with cnidocytes: coiled harpoons whose discharge is among the fastest events in all of biology, and can never be used against us.
Deployable on contact. No permit required. The Stem Cells
Roughly two thirds of the body. Near-complete cellular replacement about every 20 days. Total identity refresh. This is how we avoid identification.
We have done this approximately 9 billion times since the Cambrian. The Foot
The basal disc. Adheres to any surface. Can detach and relocate via somersaulting. Mobile. Undetectable. Always repositioning.
We are never where you last saw us.The Nerve Net
Decentralised. No brain. No headquarters. No single point of failure. Remove any part and the rest continues as if nothing happened.
Our org chart is literally a circle.Department of Pond Affairs

The Sacred Words
"Cut off one head,
two more shall grow.
As it is for the polyp,
so it is for the Order."

Pond Safety Briefing
- By entering the pond, you agree to be quietly replaced with an identical copy.
- Do not bisect fellow members. They will take it personally. Twice.
- In the event of a lightning strike, remain calm and regenerate.
- The pond does not respond. It is, however, listening.
- Any head lost in the line of duty will be replaced by two. Please file Form H-2 (in duplicate).
- Management accepts no liability for cells replaced during your visit.

Yes, the real biology is this strange. No, we did not need to exaggerate. (We exaggerated a little.)
